JAMAICA ECO-ADVENTURE

Dates and Prices

3/17/09 – 3/22/09 (age group 20s) $995

Overview

Come on this one-of-a-kind eco-adventure and explore Port Antonio, a beautiful corner of Jamaica that has yet to be discovered by commercial tourism and the place the poet Ella Wilcox Wheeler described as “the most exquisite port on earth.” Be forewarned, however, this is not your “typical” Jamaica trip to Negril or Montego Bay. If you decide to join us on this adventure, you will be going to Jamaica, not a resort town.

Highlights

  • Accommodation at an eco-village perched on cliff over the ocean.
  • Hiking the dense jungle of the Blue Mountains.
  • Surfing in Boston Bay.
  • Community service day.
  • Best jerk chicken in the world right outside your door!

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Kingston, Jamaica. You will be met at the airport and driven to Great Huts, an eco-village perched on the cliffs overlooking Boston Bay, Jamaica. Spend the afternoon exploring Great Huts and, provided you have the courage, jumping off a few cliffs into turquoise waters. We will spend the first night having a group dinner followed by a welcome session.

Day 2 – Fueled by a delicious breakfast prepared by the amazing cooks at Great Huts, we will hike to Reach Falls nestled in the jungle outside Port Antonio. Reach falls has been the set of numerous photo shoots and movies including, the often-forgotten little gem, Cocktail. After hiking and swimming in, around and underneath the falls, we will head to Frenchman’s Cove, often named as the most beautiful beach in Jamaica, for a little afternoon relaxation. Dinner at Great Huts.

Day 3 – Since you’ve already had breakfast at Great Huts, you will wake up very excited knowing just what is in store for you. Then, once your belly is full, the brave can attempt surfing in Boston Bay, while the soulful can practice Yoga. This afternoon, we will follow in the wake of Errol Flynn and raft (not whitewater) down the Rio Grande.

Day 4 – Today we will devote to community service (yes, after a delish breakfast). Katan Adventures has identified a number of meaningful opportunities in the Port Antonio area, including the Portland Shelter for the Homeless. Following our group Friday night dinner, we will head to the legendary Roof Club to show off our reggae moves (if you need instruction, consider watching the classic, The Harder They Come, starring Jimmy Cliff).

Day 5 – Today you are free to lounge around the beach outside Great Huts, relax, or take an excursion on your own. Tonight, we will enjoy a group farewell dinner in town at the venerable Norma’s, located in the Port Antonio Marina.

Day 6 – Transfer from Great Huts to Kingston for flight home.
